Comprehension Through Cloze

Comprehension Through Cloze is a six-book series that aims to develop pupils’ comprehension using high-interest, engaging activities and will ensure that pupils are challenged while attempting to comprehend text.

Each unit in each book develops comprehension through three approaches:

  • A reading passage with an incomplete illustration in which the pupils must engage in careful, close reading of the text in order to draw in the missing details on the image;
  • A cloze passage based on an illustration in which the pupils must use a range of comprehension strategies to fill in the missing words; and
  • Two focus pages on a specific comprehension strategy, making the resource superb for linking in with the comprehension strategy in use in the classroom.

The comprehension strategies covered in each book are:

  • Predicting
  • Visualising
  • Making Connections
  • Questioning
  • Clarifying/Declunking
  • Summarising
  • Determining Importance
  • Inferring
  • Synthesising

Pupils will love the challenge of drawing the missing parts of the illustration, as they must carefully read and reread the passage to figure out what needs to be included. This helps them to become more sensitive to detail in a reading passage and helps them comprehend at a deeper level.
